Training Tidbits
Just a few little tidbits that will help you learn to live in harmony with your dog. Enjoy!
  1. Maintain your dog on a schedule. Dogs are creatures of habit and it is very disturbing to them when there routine is disrupted.
  2. Never use your dogs name in connection with a reprimand. Always keep his name a positive association for your dog. This will prevent him from tuning you out when you call his name.
  3. Provide your dog with mental stimulation daily. Practice obedience commands, provide treat balls or kong toys taht make him work for his treats.
  4. Never allow your dog to jump on you. If you allow your dog to jump on you in grubby jeans he will jump on you in your Sunday best. They cannot tell the difference.
  5. Socialize your dog to many different place, people and things. If he is not socialized to different things, he will react negatively or fearfully to them.
  6. Never ever hit your dog for any reason. He will not understand a "spanking". He will learn to mistrust you and cause a aggressive reaction.
  7. Practice daily to reinforce behaviors. If you only practice intermittently your dog will perform intermittently. The more you practive the better he will be.
  8. Consistency is the key to a well-mannered pet. Don't give commands that you can't enforce. If you don't want a certain behavior to continue then correct each and every time it occurs.
  9. Keep training upbeat. Make it fun for you and your dog. When practicing with your dog, your entire focus should be on the dog. If you feel frustrated, distracted, or angry, stop training for the time being and go back later.
  10. Remember that the secret to successful training is simple actually. The two key components of dog training are information and motivation. You must let your dog know what it is that you want, then you must motivate him to continue to do it.

Puppy Tidbits

Here are some tidbits for living in harmony with that little bundle of fur. Enjoy!

1. Maintain your puppy on schedule for feeding, eliminating, playtime and sleep. Feed your puppy on schedule. Do not free feed, meaning do not leave food down at all times. Take puppy outdoors on leash to eliminate and take him to the same spot each time until he learns what it is he is supposed to be doing. Praise him big time.

2. Do not allow puppy unsupervised access to the house while housetraining. Keep an eye on him at all times. Make sure he is not chewing something that could hurt him. When puppy begins sniffing the ground or turning in circles while sniffing - get him outdoors, he may have to do his business.

3. Provide plenty of chew toys. Puppy needs to chew. Teething in puppies is alot like teething in children, they need to chew for new teeth to pop through. Do not give old socks or shoes as chew toys. They can't distingush between old ones and new.

4. To eliminate puppy mouthing-Yelp loudly each time puppy mouths on your body or clothing. Puppy time out works well also. Remember though, two minutes to a puppy is an hour to us.

5. Do not allow puppy to jump on you. It may be cute when he weighs a few pounds, it won't be so cute when he weighs a hundred pounds.

6. Socialize puppy to many different types of people, places and things. This will help him grow into a well adjusted dog.

7. Handle your puppy daily. Learning to accept touch is very beneficial. Not only does it allow for some serious bonding but it will help when he goes to the Vet for check ups. Also you may find a problem when it starts rather than later.

8. Be consistent. Correct what should be corrected each and every time. Praise whatever you want that little pup to repeat.

Happy Training!
