Frequently asked questions

Why should I train my dog? To have a better relationship with your dog. Obedience training teaches your dog that you are in charge. Studies have found that obedience training can eliminate many behavior problems that dogs exhibit.
Do I have to devote a lot of time each day to training? No, 15 to 20 mins a day is all that is needed to practice.
Will I always have to use treats to lure my dog to comply? No, we use treats in the beginning of training as a motivator. As we progress with training we will begin to treat intermittently.
Will my dog be fully trained at the end of the lessons? No, training does not stop at the end of lessons. You are learning the techniques to teach your dog the various commands. You will need to continue to reinforce all of the behaviors. Training is for the life of your dog.
Will my dog be socialized during training? Yes, while in group class your dog is socialized to various people and other dogs. He will also learn to be attentive to you even with distractions.
How old must my dog be to attend Group classes? Dogs must be 4 months to attend group classes so they have received all of their shots. Private puppy lessons in your home with you and your puppy are available at 8 weeks of age.

When is my dog too old for training?  A dog is never too old for training. Sometimes with older dogs it takes longer to teach them and requires a little more patience.

How do your classes compare to Pet store classes (Petco/Petsmart)? Pet store trainers are employees of that store that have received about a month and half of training in how to teach group obedience classes. I have completed an 18 month training program with actual hands on training with a mentor. You receive the benefit of a professional dog trainer vs. a pet store employee.

What type of training program do you use?

I use positive training methods to train dogs. I use a clicker to mark the behaviors followed by a reward. Clicker is a wonderful tool for training dogs. It gives them a split second marker to let them know that whatever they were doing when they heard the click needs to be repeated. The rewards that follow offer the motivation to encourage them to do as we ask. I never ever punish dogs for not complying. I do however use corrections to let them no when they have done something wrong. Some methods of correction are verbal, (NO, uh uh, wrong etc.) , leash correction (a quick jerk and release on the leash gives them a cue that they it wrong) or time out (the owner turns away from the dog for a few seconds and ignores him). Dogs are rewarded with food  for correct behaviors every single time when we are initially teaching them. However, when the dog is performing reliably 99% of the time I then begin intermittent food rewards. I do always use verbal praise and petting to reward them. Initially, I click and treat for every single correct response. As we progress in training I begin holding off on the click until the behavior is perfected.

The most important part of dog training is PATIENCE.  Keep in mind that until we show our dogs what it is we want they haven't a clue. So no matter how loud you say something, or how many times you repeat it your still not going to understand if you are not shown what it is you want. Think of learning a foreign language. If you were in another country and did not speak the language and someone came up to you and said something in that language - they can shout it- they can repeat it over and over- until they actually show you what the word means you will not know. That is how it is with our dogs. We must show them what each word means first and foremost. Then we give it a name and they learn to recognize what each word means.

Most importantly-Keep it fun. Enjoy your time with your dog. If you feel frustrated STOP for the time being. Go back later and try again.
